Running to End Domestic Violence Quest-Training

Here’s another entry from our guest blogger Mariya Taher. She’s writing blogs about her running and fundraising  journey for WOMAN, Inc., while keeping us informed on domestic violence.

Wherever you are in the world, make sure you do at least one thing today that will make you laugh.  =)

By the way, here is a link to WOMAN, Inc’s website, if you would like to learn more about the agency –http://www.womaninc.org/

I also wanted to share a couple updates about my running and the campaign.

First off, I just did a 9 mile training run this past Monday and during that training run, I incorporated the hill that runs along Ocean Beach up to the Cliff House in San Francisco. It’s a beautiful area near the Sutro Bathhouse ruins.  The thing about the hill is that I hate that hill!  I run it when I especially want to punish myself! The view both at the bottom and at the top of the hill is breathtaking and I’ve included a couple of pictures so you can have a visual, but I don’t know how well it captures just how never-ending this hill is. When you are at the bottom, you can only see half the hill and it seems to end right at the Cliff House. When you reach the Cliff House, you realize you are only halfway and that your legs have to somehow carry you to the top – it’s almost like a really good April Fool’s joke. Every time I run it, I seem to forget just how much of an incline there is. But after I do finally reach the top, running back down that hill feels like you are floating on air and it is more than sweet.

Secondly, I have exciting news to share! Runway Junkie, an online marketplace where you can buy and sell women’s designer clothing and accessory while helping support pro-women organizations, such as WOMAN, Inc., will be sharing blog posts about my Running to End Domestic Violence Quest via their website. You will also be able to follow me on this journey via blog entries, pictures, and videos.

That’s the update for now.

And once again, if you are able to contribute even just a small amount, please donate by visiting my fundraising page at http://www.stayclassy.org/fundraise?fcid=200917 . You’ll be able to learn more about my campaign and how to sponsor me during this journey as well! Even a $10 sponsorship can go a long way in serving domestic violence survivors.

Thank you,

Mariya

Picture #1  – Along Great Hwy in West San Francisco, this is the bottom of the hill. The white building in the picture is the Cliff House.

Picture #2 – View from the top of the hill. Once I do catch my breath and take a look down, it is pretty amazing that I get to take in such a beautiful sight.

Picture #3 – The start of my journey back downhill (the top half of the hill). The building you see in the picture is the newly created Lands Ends Visitor Center.

Running to End Domestic Violence Quest

Check out our new guest blogger Mariya Taher. She’ll be writing blogs about her running and fundraising journey while keeping us informed on domestic violence. Look out for her future blogs!

Seventy-eight miles. 411,840 feet. 4,942,080 inches. That’s the distance I’ll be covering during the SIX half marathons that I’ll be running between June 3, 2012 through December 2, 2012.

7,800 calories burned. 17 In & Out Cheeseburgers served animal style consumed to counteract this calorie burn. Or maybe I’ll just stick to eating 34 pieces of chocolate cake with white frosting and sprinkles to make up this loss in weight.

The End Result. Undergoing both an intense physical and mental challenge by running 6 Half Marathons all in the name of raising money for an agency dear to my heart, Women Organized to Make Abuse Non-Existent (WOMAN, Inc.). WOMAN, Inc. was founded in 1978, and for the last thirty-four years they have provided essential services for domestic violence survivors throughout the Bay Area.

The Races:

  • Jun. 3, 2012: San Diego, CA — Rock ‘n’ Roll Series – COMPLETED!

San Diego Rock n' Roll Half Marathon!   Sweet Victory after completing the 1st of my 6 half marathon to benefit WOMAN, Inc!   Race #1 Done! All for WOMAN, Inc.

  • Sept.  22, 2012 Denver, CO — Rock ‘n’ Roll Series
  • Oct.  7, 2012: San Jose, CA — Rock ‘n’ Roll Series
  • Oct.  14, 2012 – San Francisco, CA — Nike Women’s
  • Oct.  28, 2012 Los Angeles, CA — Rock ‘n’ Roll Series
  • Dec.  2, 2012 Las Vegas, NV — Rock ‘n’ Roll Series

So, I am writing to ask my friends and family to sponsor me in undertaking this challenge. I have two ambitious goals – first to beat my personal record of running a half marathon by atleast 1 minute in each of the 6 races and second to help me raise $5000 for WOMAN, Inc. All donations will directly benefit the agency and are, of course, tax deductible. Plus, don’t you want me to eat all those hamburgers and pieces of chocolate cake guilt free?!

Raising money for this agency holds special importance for me as I work for WOMAN, Inc. and as many of you know, I have made it my life’s passion to work towards ending violence against women. Domestic Violence affects more people than you might imagine with one out of every four women experiencing it at some point in their lifetime.  This form of violence does not discriminate and occurs among people of all races, ages, socio-economic classes, religious affiliations, sexual orientations, occupations, education backgrounds, meaning the likelihood of this situation happening to you or a loved one of yours is all too real. A statement that I am sad to say holds true for me as too many special people in my life have had to undergo this heart-breaking situation.

WOMAN, Inc. is an agency working to make the end of domestic violence a reality, but as the need outdoes the supply, this agency urgently needs our financial help to continue services for this vulnerable population.  Please join me in supporting this very important cause by considering a sponsorship in my Running to End DV quest!
